Caras Alegres, home to Happy Faces

Bienvenidos a todos!

Welcome to Caras Alegres!

Caras Alegres is a non-profit organization, working in the neighbourhood of Las Rosas, in the city of Xela, Guatemala.

Established in 2004 by Dutch founders passionate about helping in some of the poorest communities in Xela, we have been working ever since out of our location in Zona 5, Las Rosas.  Everyday, we run primary school programs, daycare, an after school program, as well as provide the space and training for our women’s empowerment project, Camino A La Independencia (CALI).  Read on to learn more about us.

Las Rosas, Quetzaltenango

We are based in the neighbourhood of Las Rosas, in Zona 5 of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.  Las Rosas is an incredibly poor neighbourhood, and many of our families live at or below the poverty line.  There is a strong history of alcoholism, early marriage, and domestic violence, and there is little opportunity to access health care or other community resources.  Many children leave school early to begin working with their parents in informal trade.  Often, a single mother is supporting a family of her children as well as other relatives.

We work in this neighbourhood with an aim to serve these families and help to better their experience, providing opportunities to the families and children that may not otherwise be available to them.
